(2002-2003) Erasmus: Trondheim, Norway

I spent one year of my study time (2002-2003) abroad with the Erasmus student exchange programme. I did the second year of the engineering master studies at the NTNU in Trondheim, Norway. I followed most of the lessons in Norwegian and took the (written) exams in English.

(Nov 2004) Athens: Trondheim, Norway

I followed a one week Athens course in Trondheim, Norway as part of my computer science master programme

(2003-2004) Engineering Master Thesis: Math Online

Today it is no longer sufficient to produce professional-looking printed output on paper; one has to be able to get it online as well, that is, make it available in electronic form of some kind. Authors who are used to the high-quality typesetting and math capabilities of TeX and the packages based on it have been frustrated by its inability when preparing documents for the Web. In this thesis an overview of the solutions authors found in the past to publish their mathematical content online is made. Further on code is written to extend the USolv-IT project with the best possible solution found.

(2004-today) Mathematics Master Thesis: Artins Conjecture

Are there infinitely many primes p for which any number is a primitive root modulo p? This conjecture from Artin, still unproven today, is studied in this thesis. A new placement of and a fresh look on the problem in the field of Algebraic Number Theory is the main purpose of this thesis.

(2004-today) Artificial Intelligence Master Thesis: Implementing a Typed Feature Structured Grammar

For this project I contribute to the open-source LKB project. The LKB system is a grammar and lexicon development environment for use with constraint-based linguistic formalisms.

Hobbies and Interests

Scouting

I have been member for 12 years and leader for 3 years in a scouts movement in Schoten. Currently I am responsible for the website and other computer-related stuff of the group.

Student Organisations

I have been a very active member of VTK Leuven, the engineering student organisation at the KULeuven. I was a member of the board in 2001-2002 and responsible for cultural activities. In Trondheim I was active at ISU (International Students’ Union).

Music

I am really in love with music of all kinds, mainly classical. I followed several music classes during 11 years of my life in piano, guitar, music culture, music theory, etc…

Computers & Internet

My whole life I have been playing around with computers. I have good knowledge of and experience with the Linux and FreeBSD operating system. I also spent some time on Microsoft Windows, although I very much prefer free and open source software. I have quite some experience in Python, Perl and Java but can find my way in other languages as C, FORTRAN, bash, … as well. In general I am a fast autodidact on most ICT-matters.

I have over 10 years of experience with the Internet and her applications and good and active knowledge of HTML, XHTML, PHP, JavaScript, CSS and other web techniques.

Further, I am quite accustomed to the LaTeX system and cooperated in a team making an updated Dutch translation of The Not So Short Introduction To LaTeX 2ε.

Sports

I have been doing 6 years of dancing: sports dance, Rock ‘n Roll, Swingrock, Boogie Woogie and Lindy Hop.

I am a Swingrock dancing teacher for students from the university of Leuven and am a member of Splendid, a dancing school in Averbode.

Theatre

I joined a theatre group at school where we played French parts. We joined the ‘Roeland, Frans voor anderstaligen’ (Roeland, French for non-native French speakers) group and played in Brno (Czech Republic), Napoli (Italy) and Gent (Belgium). At university I performed 6 years in a row as an actor at VTK Revue, a comic play of the engineering students at the KULeuven.

Travelling

I enjoy travelling very very much. My last big tour was the Transsiberian Railroad from Moscow to Beijing (and even further after that) together with my German friend Felix. Every year I try to spend new years eve abroad and I love to visit my international friends all over Europe every now and then.
